Managing Time for Students

For many students time is a constant extremely stressful part of their lives.  Multiple course loads, exams, assignments, group work, you name it.   It puts a strain on ones ability to manage their time effectively.  If not managed properly the amount of work and stress can become overwhelming.  Here are some time management principles for students that will hopefully assist in reducing stress, ensure work is finished on time, and that work is done effectively:

  1. Identify the best time for studying – are you a morning or night person? – use power times to study and down times for routines, etc.
  2. Study difficult subjects first – when fresh you can process information more quickly and save time as a result
  3. Study in shorter time blocks with short breaks in-between – this keeps you from getting fatigued and wasting time (efficient since while taking a quick break you are still processing information)
  4. Make sure your surroundings are conductive for studying to reduce distractions
  5. Make room for entertainment and relaxation – you still need to have a social life and balance
  6. Make sure you have time to eat and sleep properly
  7. Try to combine activities – reading on the bus for example
