Shift Work Strategies

Shift work is vital in the public services industries. It ensures that there is round the clock care for the well being of the community and its citizens. What we have to take into account is that although shift work is important, so is the well being of workers who are taking on 10,12 or 14 hour shifts .

Here is a list of strategies that are not limited to just “Time Management” these strategies can be implemented into your nightly routine to assist in keeping up with your well being .

1. Focus on your task: with respect to shift work it is strongly recommended that you catch up on sleep, eat healthy and participate in regular exercise, this will keep your Circadian Rhythm in check. Being well rested in a high stress environment is crucial to being able to focus properly.

2. Know your outcomes & Plan for your Task: Now that you are rested and ready to go ask yourself, what it is you want to accomplish and how? Plan for your outcomes by knowing what resources are available to you. These resources may come in the form of Procedure and Protocol books within your organization. As well as maps, CAD’s, supervisors and your team.  Having these resources organized and ready to go will help in dealing with the pressures that are integrated within shift work.

3. Start Small and Add Tasks: Every night will be different, you can never be sure what to expect while working an overnight shift. As a Telecommunicator you must posses the ability to multitask , this means that you must also be able to prioritize your task and keep task organized as they get added to your work load

4. Ask For help and Advice: Do not be afraid to ask for help. Work within  your team and turn to them before you become overwhelmed and exhausted. Your well being is important to ensure that job gets done in the right manner. Ask for feedback this is a great opportunity to get information on how you preform so that you may continue  to grow your knowledge and experience and become better prepared in dealing with difficult situations.

5. Use organizational tools: No matter what the job organizational skills are key to completing any successful task at hand. Use an organizer to better prioritize you tasks. Use your desktop to type in important information that you may want to address at a later or time or address to your supervisor. 

6. Maintain Your Balance: Allow yourself to relax and partake in social events with friends and family. Stay active, eat healthy and always remember that your wellbeing is important.
